Saturday, April 18th, 2009

At the time I write this there’s less than a month left until the Mother’s Day and there’s still time to get the present. But I figure it’s not gonna be long and many will find themselves not having gotten the present and time running out. So here are some of the ideas for the last chance gift.

First of all you will always be able to get flowers, so do that. In addition you can get some expensive chocolate. Or alternatively you can get a fruit basket. It’s a simple gift but a good one nonetheless.

But for it to be a really good gift we need to add something personal. And in this post I want to give and idea of a card made of old photos that have a meaning to you and your mother. It’s similar to scrapbooking but requires you to dedicated a lot less time, which you don’t have when we’re talking about last chance gifts.

The most feasible idea to make such a card is to use a computer. If you have any graphic editing skills you can do that simply with a program like Photoshop. Or you can look for some e-card templates online. Then print it out and add it to you flowers or the basket.

The History of Mother’s Day

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

Different countries celebrate Mother’s Day on different days, because this day has different roots of origin. To believe certain sources this day comes from a custom of mother worship in ancient Greece.

The ancient Romans also had a holiday, called Matronalia, and during the time of this day mothers received presents. Besides the Mother’s Day, in many countries International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8th.

The author of modern Mother’s Day holiday is considered to be Anna Jarvis. In 1912 she trademarked phrases “second Sunday in May” and “Mother’s day”. She has also created the Mother’s Day International Association.

Anna Jarvis created this day to honor the mother, not mothers in general. Meaning, the day is dedicated for the mother of each person, and each person has to honor his own mother.

The day was not recognized as national holiday immediately. Anna Jarvis first held a memorial for her late mother in 1907. It was a private ceremony. Later she ran campaigns to make this day popular.

Mother’s Day became popular in 1910 when clothing merchant John Wanamaker financed the campaigns. The holiday spread as a day for mother appreciation. It has become accepted as national holiday by US President Woodrow Wilson on May 14, 2009.

The Dark Side of the Mother’s Day

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Mother’s Day as we know it is a very profound and cheerful day. On this day we honor our mothers, and give them presents. We enjoy spending time with them and sharing old memories. It’s simply a very nice and sweet occasion to celebrate.

But very few people know the sad story of the founder of this day. Anna Marie Jarvis will always be remembered as the original author of this beautiful idea, and the story would end happily if it was not for the black stain on its past.

On May 12 of 1907 Anna Marie Jarvis has held a memorial for her mother who died two years earlier. After that day she took on a campaign to make the Mother’s Day a widely recognized day. She finally succeeded to do that and in 1914 it has become a national holiday.

The holiday has quickly become commercialized and Anna Marie Jarvis didn’t like that at all. In 1920s she incorporated herself as the Mother’s Day International Association and claimed the copyright of the second Sunday of May.

The Meaning of Mother’s Day

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Every single month of May we dedicate one day of the year to our dearest person, our mom. We choose this time to show our appreciation and our love. This is the day when we pay all our attention to her if we have forgotten to do that during the year.

It’s easy to forget our mother in the daily mundane world. We go fast to our jobs and back home that we forget our most important people. So it is a great tradition to remember that at least once a year and let her know we love her.

It is not with our gifts that we show it but by sharing our memories and emotions, paying her a visit and spending the day with her. This day has a deep meaning for her and for us. It is the time when we refresh our connection.

Presents we give her, are the symbol of our attention, but they have to show our feelings. The gift is merely a token, but it must show the intent. Some people choose not to give presents at all, that way exposing their feelings instead.

Green Roses Arrangements Meanings

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

Here on earth one of the most beautiful little roses are green roses. From what has been said they have been on earth since the year 1743. These roses became much more popular when they were introduced to the world in 1856 by a British company which was named Bembridge and Harrison. The strange blooms are completely made up of sepals, not petals. Once you view this type of rose you will see that the plant seemed to have forgotten to make petals, which created the rose to make a flower with more sepals.

St. Patrick now a days is no longer just the name of a saint or a holiday which comes in March. These days, gardeners who hear the phrase St. Patrick would definitely think of the kind of rose that turns out to be the greenest of all the roses. Green roses these days come in an array of shapes as well as shades, but they are definitely not the most widespread roses that you may spot in the nurseries.

First of all, the flowers come to my mind. What Mother’s Day is without flowers. Even though it sounds cliche, flowers are never old or out of place as a gift. Besides, you can do so many things with them. Big bouquets, flower baskets, fresh and artificial flowers – there are many ways to surprise her. And with flowers usualy go chocolate. A box of expensive chocolate and a bouquet is probably the most popular standard gift.
