Carriage Clocks: The Epitome of Old-World Charm

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

If you are someone who appreciates class and distinction, and if you have always favored traditional looks over the more modern fashions, you’ll find that adding an old world style carriage clock to your interior design can do wonders.

Typically, a carriage clock has a rectangular case that is made of wood or metal (oftentimes polished brass) with a little handle on top of the casing for moving the clock or hanging it. The front is made of clear glass and the white porcelain in the background lets you see the hands as they sweep the clock’s face.

During the 19th century, carriage clocks reached the height of their popularity and with more and more people riding the carriage and needing to tell the time, they came in practically every shape and size. The carriage clocks of yesteryear were larger than the ones we are familiar with today, and they were carried in leather cases to protect them during travel.

The 21st century has seen no lessening of their charms and some clocks even have gentle chimes that will give them a lovely warm aspect. No one really rides around in carriages any more, but these clocks are still popular and they can be a welcome hint of traditional culture in your home. They can often become lovely family heirlooms.
